SOLD Antique, 17th century, Indo- Portuguese figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, South India Goa.
Finely carved in solid bone, depicting the Virgin Mary with her arms crossed over her chest, draped in robes over a tunic embellished with a beaded pattern along the edges.
A superbly carved Madonna is bearing a very subtle contrapposto stance. The same subtlety may be observed in the rendering of the drapery of the vestments, the detailing of the hair, and the facial expression.CONDITION: showing age and usage, with exceptional patina, minor age cracks (common in this type of material) consistent with age to be over 300 years old.
Two small holes on the top of the head were specially drilled to fasten the silver crown with studs, which a faithful Catholic owner adorned the statue at some point in time.
The figure's base is drilled with a hole to be mounted on a stand.MEASUREMENTS:
