Antique 17th Century Thai Bronze Figure Of Buddha Shakyamuni Sukhothai Style Thailand Ayutthaya Period
Antique 17th century, Thai figure of standing Buddha Shakyamuni in Sukhothai style, cast of copper alloy, Thailand, Ayutthaya Period.
Buddha Sakyamuni stands in samabhanga, with his left hand stretched downwards along his body, his delicate face with a serene expression, downcast eyes with heavy eyelids under arched eyebrows.
He is wearing a monastic robe - samghati with a belt around his waist and a centerfold falling straight down. He is adorned with jewelry; elaborate necklaces, bracelets, large earrings, and an ornate diadem surmounted by his conical ushnisha.
CONDITION: Shows age and use, damaged; left-hand broken and repaired at the wrist. The right arm is missing, but there is a sign that someone has professionally repaired the figure by drilling a hole at the fracture to insert a pin to connect the two broken parts securely. Unfortunately, after some time, this hand was lost.The edges of the samghati robe are broken off, the neck of the head shows a sign of repair, missing the lower part of the figure.
Surface with traces of brown lacquer with red pigment visible underneath in some places.
It is mounted on the 20th-century custom-made square wooden plinth.
PROVENANCE: Acquired from a private collection of Oriental Art in Toronto. According to the information provided by the owner, the figure was purchased by his father in the early 1980s from the renowned Canadian auction house "D. & J. Ritchie Auctioneers and Appraisers" in Toronto as the 17th century Thai Buddha.
