Antique 18th c Islamic Turkish Ottoman Papier Mache Ferman Scroll Document Case
Antique 18th century Islamic Turkish lacquered papier mache Ottoman firman document scroll holders, also known as kubur (ferman mahafaza kabı-kubur or Osmanlı Dönemi Ferman mahfaza kabı - kubur).
The item is cylindrical in shape and finely hand-painted in polychrome and gold. It features seven colors of birds amidst a dense gold foliate ground, along with thistle leaves. One end of the holder has been removed to reveal the interior, which contains a metal liner.
REFERENCES: Two similar Ottoman lacquered document holders are published in Sotheby's "Arts of the Islamic World" catalog on October 8, 2014, London.

CONDITION: Although showing signs of age and wear, this over 200-year-old lacquered papier mache is in very good condition, with no repairs or restorations.
