SOLD Antique 18C Polish Hunting Sword with Polish Lithuanian Royal Coat of Arm

SKU: E963

Antique 18th-century circa 1730 A.D. Polish hunting sword (Cuttoe - Hanger) Blade superbly, engraved with the Crowned Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth coat of arms.

Straight, sturdy, thick, tapering blade, double-edged towards the point, cut on each side with a shallow and slender fuller along the back edge.

The blade is hand-chiseled on each side at the forte with a royal heraldic shield depicting the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth coat of arms; Polish Crowned Eagle, and on the opposite side, Lithuanian Pahonia - Vytis, and surmounted on the top by a Polish royal crown.

Ricasso is chased with martial trophies composed of a military drum, flags, and spears. Similar martial trophies are engraved on the Ricasso of the early 18th century Polish - Saxon general sword published in the book "Stara bron w polskich zbiorach" by Zdzislaw Zygulski. Illustration #363.

The upper part of the forte is chiseled in a typical 18th-century Rococo pattern, and the faceted spine is also chiseled with ornaments near the hilt.

The engravings contain the remains of gold inlaid, with which they were initially decorated.

Cast and chased gold gilt brass hilt comprising downturned shell-guard hand-sculpted in relief with a stag attacked by two dogs within a framework of Rocaille design.

The knuckle bow with rear quillon is hand-chiseled in the middle with a deer, the quillon block is sculpted in low relief with a stag attacked by a hound, and the ferrule is chased in a rococo pattern. Three rivets support the grip of characteristic Karabela form with natural staghorn grip scales with domed brass caps.

In its original, hand-stitched black leather scabbard, mounted with a gold gilt brass locket and chape, engraved with rococo pattern ensuite with a hilt. The locket has two pockets accompanying a knife and fork (hunting trousse).

Since the blade bears Crowned Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth coat of arms, it is possible that this sword belonged to the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Augustus II the Strong, who reigned as the king of Poland (1697–1704 and 1709–1733) or to his son, king of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Augustus III (reigned 1706–1733).
