Antique 18th Century Relief Marriage of The Virgin Mary with St Joseph
An outstanding antique 18th century European Mother-of-Pearl panel of warm golden tone finely hand carved in high relief with a scene depicts a marriage ceremony between the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. A richly attired high priest clasps the hand of both Mary and Joseph as Joseph prepares to place the ring of betrothal on the finger of Our Lady. Framed in elaborately hand-carved gilt wood Baroque style frame.
The carving is based on the well-known painting” Marriage of the Virgin”, also known as Lo Sposalizio, painted by the famous Italian Renaissance artist Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino known as Raphael. Completed in 1504 for the Franciscan church of San Francesco, Città di Castello.
