Antique 19th Century Islamic Hispano Moresque Majolica Vase by Ulisse Cantagalli

This is a very rare antique majolica vase from the 19th century, circa 1880, created by Ulisse Cantagalli in Florence, Italy. It is an impressive large vase with two handles, featuring a lustrous glaze and designed in the Islamic Hispano-Moresque style, reminiscent of Moorish Alhambra. The vase is decorated in cobalt blue with raised pseudo-Arabic calligraphy in Thuluth script, along with various animals, foliage, and birds painted in white against a copper luster background.

Marked at the base with the Cantagalli cockerel.

 

MEASUREMENTS:

Height: 26.5 cm (10.43 inches)

Width (handle to handle): 28 cm (11.02 inches).

 

CONDITION: The vase is in good condition for its age, which is over 100 years. It has no cracks, restorations, or repairs. However, there is a small chip at the rim of the base and several small chips on the spikes of the handle.

A similar Hispano-Moresque majolica luster vase by Ulisse Cantagalli is part of the collection at the Ariana Museum in Geneva, Switzerland. This piece is featured in the book "Terres d'Islam: Les collections de céramique moyen-orientale du musée Ariana à Genève" by Anne-Claire Schumacher, on pages 304-305.
