Antique 19th century Russian Orthodox St. John Icon Nevyansk School
A very unusual, antique, second half of the 19th century, Russian orthodox Icon, Nevyansk School. Finely hand painted with egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on a wood panel with splint (shponk) inserted in the back.
The icon depicts, painted in great detail, an orthodox Christian saint flanked on the upper left by Christ Pantocrator blessing the saint with the Gospels labelled illegibly on the top in Church Slavonic, possibly St. John.
The borders are painted with eight various family patron saints.
The unusual composition of the icon is probably the result of a private commission.
CONDITION: In its original condition with an old patina, with signs of age-related wear and flaking in the paint. Free of repairs or restorations. The front of the wooden frame with age splits on the corner joints.
The icon is set in its original, 19th century, custom made, elaborated gold gilt and gesso wood frame.
