Antique French Model 1866 Chassepot Bayonet

Antique French Model 1866 Chassepot Bayonet Unmarked With X Serial Number

SKU: E986

A scarce, antique, 19th-century variant of the French Model 1866 unmarked sword bayonet for the Chassepot rifled musket with X serial number.
The typical yatagan-shaped blade has a wide, flat spine and a broad single fuller. The blade's spine and ricasso are unmarked. The mortice slot on the inside is numbered "4". The steel crossguard with a down-turned guillion and a muzzle ring is stamped with serial marks "X 70652".
Complete with a correct steel scabbard stamped "V 964" on the inner side and "N 10 7" above the suspension loop.

The bayonets marked with X serial numbers were made from rejected parts and used only for military drills (rifles, carbines, and handguns) after 1873. This decision was made by the minister on June 26, 1872.

MEASUREMENTS:
Overall length with the scabbard: 71 cm (28 inches).
Overnight without the scabbard: 70 cm (27.5 inches).
CONDITION: In good overall condition – good, clean bayonet. The press stud, external spring mechanism, and scabbard locking spring work perfectly. Minor dents on steel scabbards.
